NF Formal vs self education

Non-Fiction
Thanks everyone. Your wisdom has been much appreciated. Lots of good reading suggestions.

My only problem is I've succumb frequently to the 99 cent civil war memoirs on Amazon. Thought for less than a buck they would be inciteful and full of the inner thoughts of the combatants. They so far have been mostly full of blaming others. Hood's and Johnston's so far have seemed the worst.

Which of the 99 cent memoirs have you liked best?

I've read Co. Aytch by Sam Watkins, Three Years with Quantrill by McCorkle and Barton, Advance and Retreat by Hood, Narrative of Military Operations by Johnston, and am currently going through Four Years in the Stonewall Brigade by Casper.

Have Campaigning with Grant by Porter and Appomattox by Chamberlain on deck.

Hood's and Johnston's were the worst for me since they seemed clearly written to shift blame and not educate. I was really hoping for some secret wisdom of their battle plans, but they were more like two children bickering.

Thanks, @TimR, for your comments.

I'll be interested to know what you or anyone thinks of Porter's Campaigning with Grant. I've been curious about that one.
