Friends:

I have been working on reproducting period "telegraph" matches, I wanted to give an update to a project that I have been working on, which is moving forward. We have been working on reproductions of the classic 19th century Telegraph style matches
This is a photograph of the original matches that were common during the period. You will note that the propellant chemical is very small, with limited potential of working properly.
The issue in the reproduction is the spacing of the heads, and the amount of chemical applied.

This is the first sample, showing a slightly different shape to the heads.

Second variation. You will note that the head portion is veritcal, then goes to a sharp angle.

and third, which is closest to the original, but it is questionable whether the chemicals will connect together, which is not desirable.

A pleasure to have you join with us on this BB!

Has anyone ever tried reproducing period type matches before now? For some reason I never gave the idea any thought.

A interesting project, if you are sucessful, would shipping require haz-mat fees?

Sure beats making fire by flint and tinder. Looking at the first
image in the thread, these are the "strike anywhere" type matches?

These are definitely not strike anywheres....that would definitely put them in the realm of postwar. There also was no striking surface included in the packs, but I may add one, to make it easier to use.

This is a great anecdote of the use of card or telegraph matches. This piece was reprinted in several publications in December of 1852, in a ripple effect from one newspaper to another across the country.
