William Tecumseh Sherman

Think he must have given himself that haircut! :x3: That's a nice job. The lines on his face look like cracks but, strangely, they filled in as he got older. He was one of those guys who somehow gets better looking as they age!

Almost all his pictures hide his right hand mostly or somewhat. He was shot in it at Shiloh.

TIL (Today I learned). That's interesting, what happened to his hand? And yeah he looks good in his older age.

The rebels surprised him big time at Shiloh - they started shooting and Sherman yelled, "We are under attack!" and raised his right hand. A bullet snagged it and broke a couple bones, then a spent minie ball bounced off the shoulder board on his uniform, giving him a really nasty bruised shoulder. So, a day or so later he had the smitten mitten in a sling when he encountered Forrest at Fallen Timbers. Good thing - he and Forrest glared at each other and Forrest had a pistol in his hand, but Sherman didn't. So, Forrest went on to get himself into a real pickle but didn't shoot Sherman. (Sherman sure thought he was a goner, though!)

Lol, I guess that's a code of honor sort of deal, shooting an unarmed man.

the smitten mitten
Awesome.

Sherman began keeping the hand in his coat almost right away, leading to a rumor that his hand had been shot off. This rumor reached Ellen in Ohio and she wrote a distraught letter to him, commiserating that "Your poor hand is off!" He had to write her back and tell her, "My hand is not off..."

Great colorizing job, there. I like how you didn't make his hair TOO red.

Would this be an "unhanded" man??? Sorry could not resist.
*Crickets*

Lol, the days of not having instant text messages. Atleast he didn't get an angry phonecall middle of the night in a different timezone.

Thanks man. I felt like I didn't make it too brown though, it looks sort of beet red.

He does seem more relaxed in this picture than others I have seen. Could be he had a drink or two before the shoot. Another good job Zuzah.

Nice photo, but as we say down here... "you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear." The south and the native peoples of America would have been much better off if that old minie ball split open his head like a canoe. Same for Sheridan.

To me he looks like Ted Bundy -- another known serial killer!!

Just Kidding, Just Kidding!! Hell, I'm a Southerner who was raised to despise the man, so I couldn't help myself!!!! Old habits die hard. Great picture, and thanks for sharing.
