Why didn't Buchanan run for reelection?

I am curious why Buchanan didn't run for reelection. He must of been fairly popular in the South. Buchanan after all offered the King of Spain a fortune for Cuba but was rebuffed. Slave owners in the US coveted Cuba. Buchanan did more or less keep law and order in Kn not perfectly but he did send troops to do so. I suppose Buchanan may not of been that dumb and knew bad winds where a blowing. What say Ye?
