Picking up this oddball that was part of a long time collector's stash. It's a Condemned stock 1861 Whitney that has all the earmarks of a "good and serviceable" rifle musket. Imported English 1855 style barrel, 39 1/2". Both lower and middle band springs mortises were filled in with wood, no upper mortise was cut, stock wasn't spliced. Bands are a "'63" style, no US on buttplate, condemned '61 rear sight, stock was fitted purposefully to fit the English sourced barrel, note pic of how the breech bolster wood area is cut. The number "3" is a well known mark on Whitney import barrels. Not a Federal piece but obviously meant to fill state contracts or have on hand to supply to purchasing agents.

The entire wartime Whitney enterprise never fails to amaze me. This ine is right up there with an Enfield stocked M1861. I had initially thought it simply a P53 with band springs and a M1861 lock then upon closer inspection realized it was a mix of parts. I had put it down as a Bannerman put together but now seeing this I wonder.

Whitney did some strange shenanigans for sure…

Seeing an M1861 with the straight stock of an Enfield just looks so off. Partly through your posts I've learned quite a lot. Enough to be glad I don't collect Whitney. Though I'm quite content with my M1841 Whitney and my M1861 Whitney.
