What is in this tree?

It may be a method to help keep the upper limbs growing straight but since I suppose also plenty of straight growing trees around, why choose this one?

Am I the only one to think that the rope ladder continues down to the soldier standing there, holding its bottom end or something?
I would rather think it is anchored to the ground. He is on side of the wood wall, the tree is the other side.
