What is in this tree?

It may be a method to help keep the upper limbs growing straight but since I suppose also plenty of straight growing trees around, why choose this one?

It is some kind of survey marker. It is in tallest tree so someone far away can see it and triangulate or coordinate their location

I would rather think it is anchored to the ground. He is on side of the wood wall, the tree is the other side.

good thing the average CW soldier was like 140 lbs because it doesnt look like that tree can hold much weight

I'm thin myself, but my first thought was that those upper branches look awful flimsy!

The tree was used as an observation point of the attack for firing of the cannons. It is like someone call out directions of firing, to short, right 50 yards, bingo!
