Was reading a book about the early days of secession, President Lincoln offered a major general rank to Giuseppe Garibaldi.
Garibaldi said he would accept on one condition,that the slaves should be freed. Lincoln,could not do it,at least not yet,
And so, Garibaldi declined. What if, Garibaldi had said yes anyway? if this thread has already been posted, apologies in advance.

I thought Garibaldi's condition was that he be made head of all the armies, but I could be wrong.
