Robert Duvall was one of the most versatile and talented actors Hollywood has ever seen. He and his acting workshop roommate Gene Hackman were two of my all time favorite actors. Robert Duvall was also active in the fight to preserve the Wilderness battlefield and a direct descendant of General Robert E. Lee through his mother's lineage. It was Robert E. Lee that he portrayed appropriately enough in Gods and Generals.

Sad news. One of my favorite actors. Ironically, I read that Duvall hung out with Gene Hackman (another of my favorites who passed a year ago) in their early years.

Quite a few movies I will watch time and time again with Duvall in them. Too many to even consider a favorite, but his portrayal of Augustus McCrae, his role as General Lee, his acting in Open Range are among my favorites.

Agree - listing some of his films is a disservice to others. Two of my favorites are Open Range and Broken Trail. An all-time great who kept up the high standard for decades.

What sad news this is. Duvall was a national treasure. My favorite roles of his were from 'Network" and "The Apostle," which was a movie he funded and produced, a personal message of sorts. If you haven't seen it, I strongly urge you to do so. This film brought back Farah Fawcett-Majors back from obscurity; I believe she died a couple of years later. I wish Duvall had better dialogues to work with in "Gods and Generals." I believe he could have really lived in Lee's skin if he had more to work with.

I agree. Watching Duvall in G&G is like watching Gretzky on a men's league team. He deserved a lot better and he would have nailed it.

Robert Duvall actor and Korean War veteran is gone at 95. He had many memorable rolls one being General Lee in " Gods and Generals". Might be a good time to blow the dust off your Gods and Generals DVD.

Sad news, one of my favorites as well, Tom Hagen I'd have to say was my favorite Duvall character but so many to choose from.

How can you forget Boo Radley? I knew then that he was someone to watch. A nod to Tender Mercies, too.

Same here.

Duvall and Hackmen were two of my favorite actors as well.
Duvall's performance in The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Days of Thunder and many other films was legendary.

When you look at the films being listed in this thread, they span sixty years. As he "aged out" from some roles he just moved on to new, equally great performances.

They could not have casts a better 'Lucky' Ned Pepper and Captain Augustus McRae (and they tried on both counts!)

He was great in Geronimo, Joe Kidd and Open Range, as well.
