HANDSPIKE: Metal or wooden poles of various sizes inserted in the trail of cannon and used for maneuvering cannon to the left or right. On field pieces, the trail handspike was 53-inches in length. The maneuvering handspike was used for garrison and seacoast carriages and gins and was 66-inches long, while that used for siege and other heavy work was 84-inches in length. The shod handspike was used for mortars and their casemate and barbette carriages. The truck and roller handspikes were wrought iron and used for casemate carriages.

The Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant
by Ulysses S. Grant

Hardcover: 672 pages

Grant was sick and broke when he began work on his Memoirs. Driven by financial worries and a desire to provide for his wife, he wrote diligently during a year of deteriorating health. He vowed he would finish the work before he died. One week after its completion, he lay dead at the age of 63.

Publication of the Memoirs came at a time when the public was being treated to a spate of wartime reminiscences, many of them defensive in nature, seeking to refight battles or attack old enemies. Grant's penetrating and stately work reveals a nobility of spirit and an innate grasp of the important fact, which he rarely displayed in private life. He writes in his preface that he took up the task "with a sincere desire to avoid doing injustice to anyone, whether on the National or the Confederate side."

In Robert E. Lee's Own Words:"All my records, reports, returns, etc., etc., with the headquarters of the army, were needlessly destroyed by the clerks having them in charge on the retreat from Petersburg, and such as had been forwarded to the War Department in Richmond were either destroyed in the conflagration or captured at the South in the attempt to save them." - in a letter to the Honourable W. B. Reid, of Philadelphia.

The answer is they were burned- supposedly when the 1st Penn. Cavalry burned a Conf. wagon train near Amelia Springs, VA in the Appomattox Campaign.

As posted yesterday: I'm proposing a new trivia bonus, if you write a book review for CivilWarTalk, I'll give you two bonus points, limit two bonus points per game. Does that sound fair? Visit the Campfire Chat board and let your opinion be heard!
