Generally, there were 48 balls in cannister, packed in 4 tiers. Grapeshot, which was similar, had anywhere from 9 to 21 (arranged in 3 tiers of 7). Those folks had a lot of balls! LOL!!!!

My answer is 27 balls packed in sawdust.

(One source I looked at mentions 78 balls - 4 tiers of 27)

Mike, did the rifled cannon use iron or lead balls when firing canister? Thanks, CY

The cannister contained 27 cast iron shot balls. One of the other projectiles was the spherical case and it carried 78 .58 caliber musket balls.

Yesterday's Question: How many balls were shot out of a 12-pdr Napoleon Gun with each shot of canister? 27 balls. Usually one and a half inch Cast Iron balls.

A few people got this question wrong. If you are one of them, email me your source. If it says that 12pdr. Napoleons shot 48 balls in each canister shot, or whatever you put, I'll consider giving you points.

The Berdan uniform was of standard U.S. Army Wool. However, both uniform and insignia were distinctive green in color. "to blend in with the foliage and trees during the leafy season." They wore a green forage cap with a black ostrich feather.

The US Sharpshooters, also known as Berdan's regiments (there were two) wore green shells and pants.

Berdan's Sharpshooters were the best known. The uniforms included green kepis, dark green uniform blouse, light blue trousers were changed to green. They were held to boots of canvas or leather leggings. The insignia was "USSS" for the enlisted man.

He was issued a bayonet-fitted, Model 1859; double set trigger, Sharps.52 caliber breech loading rifle. Some in Company E were armed with heavy telescopic target rifles. The government also supplied Bill with black leather shoes, brown leather knee length gaiters, an itchy white shirt, Austrian gray pants, a kepi hat, a waist belt, a cartridge box, a canteen, a square mess kit, and two unique ensembles: a fur-covered knapsack, and a distinctive green-dyed nine-button frock coat with rubber buttons-instead of the customary brass-to prevent reflection of light. The uniform, a new one was issued every year, being different from any other in the whole army, provided more than camouflage. It instilled comradeship and fierce pride. Soldiers became warriors. The insignia was brown on black.
