I got a message yesterday about where I get my trivia questions from. Well, I won't tell you where I get specific questions from, I will say that some come from books in my personal library, a few of which I'll list in a moment, and some come from the internet. Here are a few samples of my favorite books for trivia questions & answers:

The Complete Book of Confederate Trivia by Stephen Lang

Admittedly, none of these books get every fact straight, and I've learned what kind of questions are safer to ask and which ones to stay away from. However, sometimes the answer I have is all wrong, and all of you usually correct me on it when that happens.

Wow, I'm amazed, I was thinking, "Gee, these are easy questions", but I think I was wrong. Why is everyone having trouble I wonder? I'll have to give an easy one today.

Shelter Halves or Dog Tent

A two-man tent introduced in 1862 became known as a "dog tent" because as one Yankee soldier believed, "it would only comfortably accommodate a dog and a small one at that."

Dog tent. The soldier said it was called this because it was so small it could fit a dog. They also referred to them as Dog Houses.

A "Dog" or Shelter tent,similar to the "Pup" tent used in WWII.

The Army would call it the 2-man shelter tent. The soldiers would call it the "Dog Tent" and today it is known as the "Pup tent". I guess as we grew larger, the tent was even fit for a dog, only a puppy. In one of his letters home, my great, great uncle Henry Brown said they were getting new tents, with each half being carried by a soldier. When set up they were buttoned together. In his letter he said he could not remember what they were called.

As far as I know there were two common two man tents that I know of, one the "A" Tent was a semi-permanent structured tent used by staff and officers. On the Campaign however, it would be common to see soldiers in a "Shelter" Tent was often of two canvas panels buttoned together.
