The Ironclad Tecumseh, Commander T. A. M. Craven, fired the first shot of the battle at forty-seven minutes past six o'clock. Commander Craven sighted the Confederate vessel Tennessee approaching the fleet from her position above Fort Morgan and, his ship being in the lead, immediately turned to starboard to intercept the attacker. Unfortunately, Tecumseh almost immediately struck a mine (called 'torpedos' at that time) that exploded and ripped out her bottom. She sank almost instantly, her stern rising out of the water so that the propeller was seen turning in the air as she slipped beneath the waves.
