Another recent thread made wonder about a topic/question I don't think I've seen raised before.
But its often mentioned slaves escaping into Union lines/occupied areas. Has anyone found accounts of slaves being shot by Union/Confederate sentries? Would think it almost had to occur.
Don't see runaway slaves waltzing through Confederate lines in daylight......at night unknown figures would run the risk of being shot by both sides sentries. Wouldn't think runaways in unfamiliar territory could be aware of where picket lines were for sure.
