I've managed to locate 2 iron canister balls (appears to be from a 12 pounder) that embedded themselves in a tree. This piece was recovered from the Chickamauga battlefield many years ago and now resides at the Mississippi History Museum in Jackson. I've always loved looking at these "war logs".

That's a nice one. For some reason you see a lot of war logs from Chickamauga. Ive been told was due to the huge amount of old growth trees where the battle was fought. Here is one from my collection which was a carbine bullet in wood that I found at Chickamauga and I had Doc Gary make a pen out of it.

One of the nicest war logs I seen with a Hotchkiss shell and its from Chickamauga.

I remember reading years ago an article in North South Trader about war logs and it stated that many of the saw mills around the Chickamauga area would not take logs from the battlefield area due to the shells and bullets in the wood which would completely destroy a saw blade. Below is the favorite in my collection. A 69 round ball I found at Champions Hill in wood and Doc made me a pen from it and the base is from cypress wood from the copula of the Warren County courthouse that was shot off by the yankees as the CS was using it spot rounds. Bubba gave Doc a huge piece that he makes pens that they sell in the gift shop at the Old Courthouse museum.

This is one that I own that I bought from the late Lawrence Christopher many years ago. It has two 3 ring Minies heading in opposite directions. The tree was originally cut around the 1930's and the bottom section (pictured) was removed as a stump in the early 1970's. It is about 10" diameter and around 20" tall.

Now that's very cool! Thanks for sharing.

Looks like larger Grape Shot? Very cool to have that. I have a piece of cannister from Gettysburg.
