Wade Hampton's Cat, Tom

Tom may not strictly be a civil war cat, but Wade certainly was. This story comes from Hampton's time as Governor of South Carolina (1876-79). Although it first appeared in a Charleston paper, here we have it as reprinted in the St. Alban's Daily Messenger (Vt.) for Feb. 1, 1879:
