That looks like a nice example! I have a nearly identical one which has the "Kings Head"stamp but lacks the Horstmann marking, so I have no idea who it was assembled by. It also lacks a scabbard. Does anyone know where to find a repro scabbard that will fit?

I would try and find an original scabbard and not cheapen it up with a repop. Make sure you measure the blade length as there are 2 different lengths.

Not necessarily. Horstmann used the different corporate designations of the company name concurrently for a long time. For example, he was using this same logo/company name for M1859 sergemts' swords he was providing to the Marines into the 1890s.

That's true. On buttons the Horstmann backmark does appear to change in the manner UCVRelics points put above, but for some reason on swords you see the "&Sons" used well into the late 1800's.

I always thought the button backmarks were the same as their other marked items. I stand corrected and I learned something new today. Just goes to show you can teach an old dog a new trick. Thanks for the info.
