Vicksburg Advice

[7th Mississippi Infantry]

I am hoping to dine there the Thursday night that I'll be in Vicksburg. I know I'll be tired by then.

I haven't been yet, but from what I've heard it's fantastic.

Hey guys, I posted pictures without commentary. Then I tried to post up commentary, but computer crashed, I guess. I'll see if I can figure out how to put all this with the pictures of South 10. Sorry.im just now able to post. The pictures are on page 3 of this thread. Sorry!

Here goes a truncated version of what I tried to post with pictures before computer crashed. It seems this thread might be useful to folks going to Vicksburg in future.

These are pictures atop South 10 restaurant in Vicksburg. One picture is to the south, you can see I-20 and RR bridge. The other picture is to north, showing Old Court House and everyone else LAUGHING while I disrupted other people trying to eat.

The food I posted is of my son's plate and my plate. My wife and her friends eat rabbit food so I did not post them because I'm a culinary idiot and they might as well live in California or something. I like steak and you see it from pictures and is why I posted it. My boy's is chicken waffle, mine is obviously a steak cooked medium rare. Great! Great!! However, the menu is Al a Cart. Keep that in mind. Rabbit food, however, comes all at once on a plate so you get what you get with that!

But I wanted to say that if you go to Vicksburg and you have a spouse not so interested in war or whatever, South 10 restaurant is located near Brick Street. It is here where (in my case means women folk) can shop for clothes and stuff and shoes. There is, evidently, a spa on this street, too. I don't know the name of it, but wife and girls say they like it, so whatever. All they say to us before my son and I go to the Park is "Let us know if anything has changed! Please let us know if our boys won this go round," or something like that. It's a ritual. Otherwise, my son and I find ourselves sitting on a bench on Brick Street looking like a pair of nepharious people waiting on a bus or something worse. Thus we go to the Park while shoes are looked at by our beloveds.

Now, having said all the above about 10 South, I will say that the secret place for Vicksburg is Beechwood Restaurant. (To the Vicksburg locals and lurkers here who aren't active participants to this site and ((I know you are watching and I know you know I know.))But I betray nothing hereinafter, if I go wrong I understand).

Edit: Okay, here goes. Beechwood is different. Here is a true democracy. Logging trucks and animal control vehicles parked next to Mercedes, limousines and run-of - the -mill cars. Nuff said about that, except I will say I it's local. There is a west side and east side to the place, meaning as you walk in, diners go to the west where there is the famous open grill (grandfathered in and thus escapes modern laws and regulations) and honky tonkers go to the east, right side. It's been there since the 50s. One of my relatives ate a good steak there in 1959, then went to the other side and saw the Texas Troubadore (Ernest Tubb), and he's never let us live it down!! Anyway, if you go to Beechwood, and dine to the left , get the "Beechwood Classic" (filet mignon) with Fried shrimp.

We ate the Walnut Hills Restaurant downtown. Tight fit for the number we had with us but the food was good and so was the service.

one of the Rangers at vicksburg does a wonderful tour on YouTube I might also add out of all the people I ever left a message to he actually got back to me and thanked me for watching they seem like some very nice people there good luck.

Looks like my trip to Vicksburg will be postponed. My spouse broke her shoulder and X-rays and other tests found other issues going on. More tests scheduled.

Bumping this thread. Looks like the trip in October that I had to cancel is back on. Been chomping at the bit for a trip to Vicksburg and watching the calendar and weather and it looks like the trip is on this weekend. Still planning on a Thursday before the crack of dawn departure and midday stop in Alexandria,LA is still on. A full day Friday at Vicksburg. Might hire a guide for that. Prolly too late to schedule a private tour at Champion Hill on Saturday but I'm gonna look into that tomorrow if my trip is a definite go. If it is a definite go,I'll book me a room tomorrow. Be there 2 full days (Fri-Sat) and roll home Sunday.

Edit to add: I surprised even myself when showing all I could do in 2 days rolling solo last month at Port Hudson and in East Texas.

Been chomping at the bit for a trip to Vicksburg and watching the calendar and weather and it looks like the trip is on this weekend. Still planning on a Thursday before the crack of dawn departure and midday stop in Alexandria,LA is still on. A full day Friday at Vicksburg. Might hire a guide for that. Prolly too late to schedule a private tour at Champion Hill on Saturday but I'm gonna look into that tomorrow if my trip is a definite go. If it is a definite go,I'll book me a room tomorrow. Be there 2 full days (Fri-Sat) and roll home Sunday.

Edit to add: I surprised even myself when showing all I could do in 2 days rolling solo last month at Port Hudson and in East Texas.

Just remember the 2nd Texas Lunette is where the Jewish Cemetery is now.

And, don't do what I did in 2006, go there expecting to climb to the top of Sky Parlor Hill. (Guide at Old Court house Museum to me: "Ah, that was demolished in the 1880's.")

Would any Vicksburg locals here in CWT be available or willing to do the private Champion Hill Tour on Saturday if I can arrange it? It's $100/per person with a 2 person minimum and I would pay the $200 for the both of us. Right now it looks like my trip is a definite go...maybe.

It's on. Made hotel reservations and hired an NPS guide for a two hour tour on Friday morning. Any local Vburgers interested in hooking up or going to the private Champion Hill Tour?

Unfortunately, I'm not able to make it at this time.
