This recipe is from cookbook, "Civil War In The Kitchen Cookbook" by Hugh and Judy Gowan.

"Grammy's Hot Lettuce"

Fry about 4 slices of bacon. Add two cups water, one cup sugar and about 1/2 teaspoon salt or less.

Mix one egg and 1 heaping and 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch together like for gravy. Stir in while water and sugar are boiling, stirring all the time.

Take off stove. Add 2 tablespoons vinegar or to your taste. Pour over leaf lettuce or spinach.

You can store in refrigerator.
