USCT cavalry

[major bill]

Although it appears many USCT units were infantry a fair number were artillery (especially heavy artillery) but some were in the cavalry. Does anyone know how the percentages compare with other Union soldiers?

Can we assume that most USCT cavalrymen were proficient horse riders before they joined a cavalry regiment?
