How much blowback did Lincoln get from recruiting and creating USCT? Was it a handful of editorials from some conservative democratic newspapers? Were there vocal governors from border states denouncing this? Was it just comments in private from trusted allies like Blair? Was it much more of a widespread initial opposition across the Union states? Or, racism and hatred be damed, we're happy to have the manpower for our Union armies and everyone generally rallied to the decision?
