How common were they? I have only seen one or two originals and no photographs. I also have yet to see a reenactor wearing one. Is it because they were rare?

Thank you

I have examined many original knapsacks. The only I ever can accross that was unpainted, was also incomplete. And dont make the mistake of worrying with what you see other reenactors wearing. You sound like you do research and use photographic evidence. And I never see many reenactors wearing a painted knapsack let alone an unfinished canvas pack. Stay safe, go with a well documented copy of an original.

Thank you for your advise. I have since seen a couple in photographs but not close enough to determine their structure. I also determined to go with a Mexican War- type, as that sort seems a good deal more common. Might go with the French import style instead; though less common a very interesting sort.

Absolutely, L D Haning makes an excellent mexican pattern kibbler. Most comfortable pack ive ever worn, and I have done a great deal of miles under it. If money is tight, i can refer you to a place very much unknown, for about 95 dollars the man makes a decent single bag
