Unknown Mark on Springfield Conversion

Hello All - I'm curious as to a mark from an 1812 Model Springfield percussion conversion with a Richmond barrel. It appears to be a "C" or "O" that is below the trigger guard. Is this a typical inspector mark from when the musket was produced?

It could be the remnant of a Q which was a mark used for weapons reworked by the Confederacy. See this thread for more info:

I found some old postings about Markings on Confederate C&R arms. I checked my 1863 Springfield that I have had about 15 years and never paid attention to the Z on the bottom of the stock. This stamp is by the buttplate and is the correct .022 " type. I ordered Capt Steve Knott book...

Thanks. Several folks have thought it to be a Q remnant. Most of these are marked above the trigger guard, has anyone seen one marked below the trigger guard?
