Tomato jam is type of fruit preserve. It is made with tomatoes and sugar.

One of earliest recipes was from 1840. It was published in the "American Farmer". It involved straining stewed tomatoes through cloth. One added an equal amount of sugar and then boiled mixture for a few hours.

Another early recipe was from 1843 and was published in the "Boston Cultivator". The process to make was rubbing stewed tomatoes through a sieve. You than added equal amount of sugar and then stewed the mixture into a jam.

An early recreated recipes is from "The Original Country Cookbook".

4 1/2 lbs tomatoes
1 tablespoon broken cinnamon
4 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups vinegar
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoon cloves

Scald and peel tomatoes. Quarter them. Place in cooking pan and add sugar, vinegar and spices. Cook slowly until thick and then put in jars.

This sounds amazingly close to a recipe that was handed down through our family for generations, although I don't recall it being referred to a "jam". I think my grandmother simply called it "cooked tomatoes" and it was typically served over vegetables like peas or lima beans. That really brings back memories. I'm going to have to try this. Thanks for posting.

My grandmother ALWAYS had this at a family gathering. But she made it fresh then refrigerated it . Got it out for dinner and we put it on peas beans, cabbage, Collards

Like to see your recipe for tomato pie. We saw cooking show Saturday and they made tomato pie. It looked delicious.
It's basically well drained ( use paper towels to draw moisture out) peeled and chopped tomatoes with peppers and fresh basil (or whatever you want/like) on a prebaked pie shell . Mix mayonnaise and whatever kind cheeses( I use a mixture of cheddar and others) until you get a spreadable mix not runny. Bake in oven 350 F for about 30 to 45 minutes covering exposed crust with foil so not to burn.
