Looking for information about the defenses around Richmond in 1864 & 1865, specifically about the 24th Georgia (Wofford's Brigade, Kershaw's Division, First Corps). The regiment arrived sometime in December 1864 after the failure in the Valley with Early. Wondering about general information about the defenses and if the regiment or brigade was engaged during December 1864 until the withdrawal from the defenses.

The historians at the NPS Richmond/Petersburg site should be able to help. I've made email inquiries with them before and they were prompt and thorough in their responses.

Robert E. L. Krick on the battlefield.

Robert E.L. "Bobby" Krick has lived or worked on Civil War battlefields almost continuously since 1972. He grew up on the Chancellorsville Battlefield near Fredericksburg and graduated from Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg with a degree in history. He has worked in various historical capacities at several battlefields, including Little Big Horn Battlefield National Monument in Montana and Manassas National Battlefield Park. Since 1991, he has been a historian at Richmond National Battlefield Park. Krick is widely published on Civil War topics. His first book, The Fortieth Virginia Infantry, was a unit history, and in 2003, the University of North Carolina Press publishedStaff Officers in Gray, a biographical register of the Army of Northern Virginia's staff officers.

Richmond Redeemed by Richard J. Sommers covers the battles there during Grant's Fifth Offensive in the fall of 1864 (September - October), i.e. Chaffin's Farm, New Market Heights, Fort Harrison, etc. Most of the major battles on the Richmond front occurred then; there wasn't much action there after that besides skirmishing. That's an excellent book though, extremely detailed with good maps. Even if the 24th Georgia wasn't there at that time it will still give you a good idea of the defensive lines around Richmond and situation there.
