To Antietam

Thanks everyone, it's only 52* here in Chambersburg at 6:35 am, looks to be a beautiful day to travel and tour.

We arrived back in Chambersburg about 4:30pm. It was a lovely day to go to Antietam Battlefield and the town of Sharpsburg. The trip is about 50 minutes depending on traffic. It really was not crowded at all, only one car was behind me on the tour, and there were lots of parking spaces at the different points of interest. I must say that the land and the battlefield is nicer to view than Gettysburg, to me anyway. Just lovely country. We started with the film, museum, observation deck and gift shop. I was very impressed with all. I bought a Parrott Cannon (actually referred to as a Parrott Rifle) and a T-shirt in the gift shop. When I took the Parrott out of the box I saw it had a brass/bronze barrel, but I read that a Parrott Rifle actually had an iron barrel. It looks nice anyway. Then we took the drive through the battlefield and stopped at many of the points of interest. Everybody we met was very nice and friendly. The people at the visitors center are exceptionally nice. After the battlefield, we drove into Sharpsburg and had lunch at Captain Bender's Tavern. I really liked the decor and the waitress said that it has been there since 1938. We stopped over to Nutters Ice Cream Shop but the line was so long and we were still full from lunch. Maybe next time. I really like the town too. There is a lot more that I have to learn and see on my next trip, which I will take in a few months. But that film in the visitors center is a great way to start the tour. And next time perhaps go to Shepherdstown too. I took some pictures. It was nice to sit in the old pews in the Dunkard Church.

If you get the chance walk from the Roulette Farm to Bloody Lane, it gives an appreciation for what the Irish Brigade saw on the approach, (you really get a great feel for the lay of the land and how it came into play)
