Hand Made.Who made it?
I bet you found this on the same Facebook page that I look at from time to time!!......Obviously, it s a jacket for reenactors (I say just so I know I've said it!)
I think it's a nice coat.....However, being a reenactor myself, I would prefer to try it on for size. Even though it lists a size, bear in mind that it could still be a bit larger or smaller than what you are accustomed too....Also, if you were a vest, the size of the coat could suddenly fit more snuggly.....The same is true if the coat has an inside pocket, which you then fill (like I do!) with a Diary, pipe, tobacco, etc.....
As to price, for a "used" coat, $100 is the maximum I would go, regardless of age or maker.....For example: A 10 year old coat made by Sekeela has 10 years' of use, regardless of maker....
Just my thoughts.....Good luck!!....Let me know what you decide and your thoughts!!![]()
Also, make sure it is the correct "style" of clothing for the theater/period AND unit that you wish to portray.....Please get the RIGHT thing instead of the CHEAP thing......
Appears to be a Dept of Alabama-AOT pattern jacket. Doesn't look bad at all. A couple of these have survived with wooden buttons... rather than brass.. Lots of hand working and button holes visible... that's good... However it is later war.... theater and area specific for the most part.. if that fits your desired need and impression. The recently observed average for an authentic and good quality gently used jacket tends to vary around about $100-$150.. give or take... depending on the materials, quality and condition.... Of course one can always find something less in the Pakistani made costume patterned, all machine stitched sutler row economy goods... But you generally get what you pay for. I normally suggest folks to get one size larger than they normally wear... especially with jean cloth which will naturally shrink up a little bit first time you get caught in a rain storm... or for some reason always tend to shrink in the closet over the winter months.....

I hate to hear of your misfortune.....But, another deal will come along, I promise!!I can't get it. My mom's car broke down at that will affect it.
I was considering it, but I don't think this man will hold it until December, when I can afford it.
Thank YouI hate to hear of your misfortune.....But, another deal will come along, I promise!!
Good luck!!
Thanks for the information.Unlike the pre-war and militia days when it was the common style to have a snug tailor made military jacket or coat.... after some experience in the field... usually not so much.... Many would prefer a jacket that's a little looser fitting... both observations can be seen in period photos.... Besides for us today... having something slightly larger gives some shrinkage room.... as mentioned by Sailhorst above... if you might later want to wear a waist coat (vest) under your jacket... it gives you a little breathing room doing so.... also provides some growing room... to lengthen the use of a jacket too....
Most prefer to do a more generic most common portrayal impression for the theater being portrayed.... It also may reflect the unit being portrayed... to time and place.... lots of variables there... so that's why many chose to use something with the widest ability and time frame of use... There was some cross over from one theater to another.... western or deep southern troops being sent up to the ANV in 1864, still wearing their previously issued goods.... Longstreet went west with his troops wearing brand new ANV issues.... also the quartermasters in 1864 especially sent gear from other depots into the ANV when their own supplies were short..... You had Columbus Jackets being sent to and issued out of Richmond in 1864... that normally would not be the general rule or expectation to see..... However these being a few exceptions... rather than a common guide or rule of thumb.....
Understand the funds situation... many of us have similar issues too... your not alone there... More will come along... People near the end of a given season tend to do some winter month closet cleaning... so the market frequently expands during this time..... monitor and watch it... something else will come along in due time.....
Thanks for the information.
That's good to keep in mind.
My other idea was to get a more mainstream uniform, because I still am growing.
It makes me a bit sad though, because it was a nice coat. As you stated
earlier it was available for a limited time during the war.
I live with my mother, & we move in the summer.Different ways to look at it.... yes a sutler row mainstream jacket might be less expensive... but also considering these also retain very little resale value on the secondary markets once you grow out of it.... a higher quality jacket of authentic materials, patterns from a reputable maker.... doesn't depreciate as quick.... tends to retain more of its value.... more funds to turn over into your next one....
On a side note.... when you can affiliate with a reenactment group... they frequently will have loaners available that you might be able to make temporary use of till you get your own... They also frequently will have folks with older gear they might have also grown out of available for a decent price..... which might be a better deal than something off the open market.... just a thought....
Noticed on one of your previous posts regarding jacket still being able to use if/when you move.... Are you planning to move?
It's the way it's photographedI dunno ... one arm is longer than the other. Seems like you ought to get a discount for that.

It's the way it's photographed
lolI knew that. It's BJ's nature to make such comments. Lame attempt at humor (frowned upon here).
As you were.
