Dragoon Jacket

have an opportunity to create a dragoon impression circa 1842. the only builder of dragoon jackets I see is Jarnagin. haven't found any others who are building these. referring to the mod 1833 jacket - short waisted, not the frock. all input welcome.

I'm not certain if Jarnagin is still in business. The only person I know that makes Mexican-American War era jackets is Joe Blunt at Carter and Jasper Mercantile, you can contact him on Etsy and Facebook. Though these are custom orders.

If you can sew or know someone who does, I believe Tracy Lyndon on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/share/188NHBq115/) cuts patterns for 1833 infantry jackets. It might be worth contacting him to see if he can cut a pattern for a dragoon one.

From a quick web search, it does seem that Jarnagin is still in business. Their website is active and copyright was updated to include the year just ended. I would give them a call. I bet that jacket will be a special order anyway.

I would agree with going with Joe Blount for the jacket. If you need leather gear as well I would contact Jarnagin.

Well there's a couple options other than Jarnagin, which while they're website is active and all I've heard their scaled back. You have to call them I think. That said, if Carter and Jasper will make it for you, I highly recommend them. But two other options I know of:

Top Hats can probably help you out. Their web presence is not great, but Seminole War stuff is big for them, after CW. While they're website make belt buckles and some great and useful ammo crates here in the States, their uniforms are made overseas. Give them a call or message them on FB, if you're okay with cheap Pakistani made uniforms. This weekend they're set up at the Dade's Massacre reenactment. They recently started putting out replicas of the M1828 cartridge box…

Another, I have NO CLUE if he's still in business, and I've heard things about authenticity that are off. But Mexican War stuff is a big thing for them. I've personally debated getting a wheel hat from them for my pre-war stuff.

All that said, pre-war 1840's is picking up traction. I know end of the month, (I'm probably leaving later to go work on it) here in Texas near Oklahoma we're having a weekend camp out of CW Confederate cavalry and frontier Mountain Man for drill and getting ready for the Spring season. I've been slowly building an 1830's impression and Mexican War Texas Ranger impression for these fall/winter hangouts we've been doing. Feel free to reach out.

They only have jackets every now and then, but from the pics they look like good reproductions for the price. Currently they don't have any, but some trousers. I've picked up a pair of they're dragoon trousers, and while I wouldn't call them top of the line, they are good for post-1840 when the army started using fly front trousers instead of broadfall. In other words, Mexican War. I would complement them for having a very good shade of yellow that is good for the time, and not the bright neon yellow you see everywhere on a lot of stuff.

That 1840s is having surge in interest sounds promising. I hadn't noticed. But I don't have very many solid contacts in reenacting yet. Whereabouts is your drill for the event taking place? Been working with some folks at Fort Washita, stone's throw north of the Sherman Texas area. I'm out of Oklahoma City. Would love to see some pics. I have another impression in the works - A 1840s-50s U.S. Regiment of Mounted Riflemen. Needs more work though, a matter of the uniform versus what they actually wore in the field. So I'm in the market for an appropriate 1840s-50s shirt. Many of the rifles adopted frontier dress to wear as it was more practical for the climate and the mission. If u have any shirt ideas let me know please. Would like to attend your actual event when it takes place.

I spoke recently with Robin Jarnagin, sadly I learned that after they run out of leather they will no longer make leather items.

I'd say the surge in interest is only amongst CW reenactors. Something different, something new, and a bit of escape from some political messes.

We're setting up camp near Clarksville, TX last weekend of the month. Be mostly cav. but there will be some Mountain Man guys getting ready for their season as well. You'll be welcome.

As for Fort Washita I plan on being there for the Rendezvous in March.
