There was a Confederate sharpshooter at Port Hudson known as "old thousand yards" There was an oblique reference to him in the recent Civil War Monitor where he met a Union officer during a truce. What an interesting article, reminds me of the WW1 Christmas truce, its strange how these men had grown to view each other as less than human until they meet. The other thing that really struck me was how they were relieved to be able to stand upright and that they both shared similar hazards and depravations.
A brilliant find that Dutch, great article.

I hope we can find more stories like these, it would be great to keep this thread going because I'm learning so much from it.

I just found a good site 'A sharpshooter's Gallery, it has everything connected to Sharpshooters. There is also an interesting article called 'Shock Troops of the Confederacy:
The Sharpshooter Battalions of the Army of Northern Virginia' also take a look at the weapons page.
