I found this gem of Historical News... President Lincoln had a second cousin also named Abraham Lincoln who was from Virginia and fought for the Confederacy. Lincoln learned about the Virginia Lincoln's while he was in Congress and wrote to them... They replied...

The Confederates had their own Lincoln, Private Abraham B. Lincoln of Company F in the 1st Virginia Cavalry. What's even stranger is that the two Lincolns were related.

While serving as a Congressman in 1848, the future President Abraham Lincoln learned of the possible connection to the Lincoln family in Virginia and wrote to Private Abraham B. Lincoln's father, David Lincoln, asking about any family connection.

David Lincoln, a farmer and inn-keeper in Lacey Spring, replied with his family history, to which Congressman Lincoln wrote back:

As Private Abraham B. Lincoln, who was born in 1822, was 26 years old at the time Congressman Lincoln sent the letter, it is almost certain the two Abraham Lincoln's knew about each other, although it is not known if they ever had any contact.

I wonder what the total count of deserters was in the CW? I have seen rosters of Buffalo NY regiments
and have seen large numbers of deserters listed.

Lincoln was a pretty common name. It's a little surprising anyone thought it of note, that someone had the same name? Tons of ' Lincolns ' scattered through census lists, and every, 25th man of any surname seems named ' Abraham '. Poor guy though. You would have thought he'd have used his middle name.

Have to say, the Southern Davis must have disliked having the same name as the Union guy. Murdered Bull Nelson and removed that bridge from in front of all those stranded refugee, African Americans? Unclear why they kept him around.

I have two threads,with statistics on that subject.

"How Serious was desertion in the Union Army ".
It was quite serious. The difference was many Confederate soldiers defected to the Union Army or became Unionist guerrillas or freelance bandits.
