I think I'll stick with Louis Bayard's take on the postponement of the Todd-Lincoln nuptials and the Lincoln-Shields duel that didn't quite happen. I know it's a novel, but his take is really more plausible.

How is S.A. Douglas a conspirator? He died on June 3, 1861. Are the conspiracy crazies now going to totally revise their timeline saying there was a plot to asassinate Lincoln before June 3, 1861? Are they going to claim that SA Douglas was murdered beacuse of this plot?

That minor detail hasn't stopped a lot of other equally implausible "facts" from being posted. And this one from Yogi is probably appropriate here:

"Always go to other people's funerals, otherwise they won't come to yours."

On the subject of Abe standing Mary up at the alter. I though there some theory that ole Abe may have contracted V.D., or believed he might have contracted it about that time, and that that may have had something to do with his reticence to marrying Mary.

I'm not Intending to bash Abe, he was only human after all. No penicillin in those days though.

I'm just going by my memory about all this and that's not known for it's high reliability factor.

I've heard that too. My only knowledge of it is in the Gore Vidal novel, and he got it from somewhere else.

@TallTallMan I can't remember where I read that story but it wasn't from the Gore Vidal novel cause I never read that.

I have no idea about its validity but is seems plausible to me. I get the impression though that if it was true Abe would have had a lot of company.
