Looks like the short story was also adapted into a Russian short film in 1960 though I can't find it anywhere online. Can't find the short story itself either.

The story can be found here for purchase. It is in the book Fierce and Gentle Warriors by Mikhail Sholokhov. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1965. His most famous book is And Quiet Flows the Don. He wrote mainly about the Cossacks and the area around the Don River.

For @Zack , WorldCat says the Los Angeles Public Library System has a copy of the book. Both UCLA and USC libraries are listed as having copies. For the rest of us, there are many holding libraries listed in WorldCat, so your interlibrary loan librarian should be able to find you a copy if your library doesn't have one.

If people hadn't messed with the Internet Archive, there'd be a copy there, too.

Or you could try your local library. The entry from my library's shared catalogue is how I found the name of the author of the original story on which the movie is based. In the stacks, it may be shelved under the title or under Hallmark. My library just reclassified the movies from title to Hallmark. I have mixed feelings about that. There's a whole shelving unit full of them!
