Hi All
Looking for any input and taking a measure if a book would even be wanted, Please read on and provide any input, positive or negative. all is sought after.
Over the years I have acumulated so many Order of battles, down to the last gun and crew makeup of nearly every nalval engagement of the Civil War. I made these mostly for gaming reasons. Therei s so much already out there on the actions themselves and what happened.
Would you, as a community feel a book containing Order of battle for the Naval engagements of the Civil War desire such a volume in your library? I have collected lots of nuggets from unusual sources to build these up.
Right now it is by Vessel (or Fort) name, units on board, (I. E. What units were in Ft Jackson, Commanding officers, (Chain of Command) Guns on her in that battle, Known measurements, Crew numbers, and notes on the event, I.E. CO killed in battle, Command succeeded to, etc. and also if known, KIA, and WIA during the battle itself.
This is more a quick reference guide to know whos who, and where started at. The stories have already been told in redundency.
Mr Hall, You have been down this road to publishing several times, any suggestions by you would be GOLD!
Thank you for your time.

Mike D,

Mike, that sounds like a very useful reference. There are lots of times I'd have wanted one of those handy.

One thing you'll want to look at closely is the list of actions you're including. Since this material was generated mostly for gaming purposes, it might not cover many of the actions that prospective readers are interested in. It may actually require a lot of additional research on your part.

Mike,

Such a book would have no use for my personal library, as my work does not touch on naval engagements.

Having said that, though, this sort of standard reference book is highly desired by those of us who research these topics. What you suggest would be a very valuable addition to the standard references on the naval aspects of the war. I say, go for it.

Mike,
It sounds like you've spent a ton of hours putting all this info together. I encourage you to put that into a book form not only for ACW Navy students but for yourself. It would be a shame for all that well researched information "end up in the attic."
I think you owe it to yourself & I hope you include USMC ship attachments :)

Mike D,

Mike, I am new to this board. This is my first post. The administrator suggested you might could help me. My gg-grand father, Sgt. Lott Warren Johnson of the 50th Georgia, signed the oath and joined the U.S. Navy in May 1864 from Rock Island, ILL. From where he joined, I am guessing he would have been assigned to one of the Brown Water Navy ships operating on the Mississippi. Can you tell me any way to track on what ship he might have served? He made it back to Georgia, eventually moving to and dying in Polk County, Fla. He was captured at Fort Sanders, Tenn. in Nov. 1863.
