I purchased a gold tipped stick with the names of Wheeler and Palmer and a date of Sept 1 65 from one of the first Veterans home for Civil War vets in 1888. Yountville Calif.

Any ideas on this?

It wasn't unusual for veterans to have walking sticks made that commemorated their service and you may have one of these.

Research found a Brigadier General Palmer as capturing General Wheeler while in pursuit of Jeff Davis. Palmer was in St. Louis working for the Kansas Pacific Railroad. On Sept 1 65 Wheeler was beaten with a stick or cane while he testified on behalf of Champ Ferguson. I purchased the stick from aCivil War veterans home and one of Palmers dragoons lived there. After the war both men met in 1905 at a reunion in Colorado Springs at Palmers home.

The engraving letters before Palmer isnt clear.

Wheeler was beaten by a Col. Joseph Blackburn USA.

It appears to be a "walking stick." I think "swagger stick" is a later monicker.
They were very popular after the Civil War. They gave balance, showed prestige and provided protection.
