I purchased a gold tipped stick with the names of Wheeler and Palmer and a date of Sept 1 65 from one of the first Veterans home for Civil War vets in 1888. Yountville Calif.
Any ideas on this?

Clear as a bell in the photos. The engraving letters before Palmer isnt clear.
Research found a Brigadier General Palmer as capturing General Wheeler while in pursuit of Jeff Davis. Palmer was in St. Louis working for the Kansas Pacific Railroad. On Sept 1 65 Wheeler was beaten with a stick or cane while he testified on behalf of Champ Ferguson. I purchased the stick from aCivil War veterans home and one of Palmers dragoons lived there. After the war both men met in 1905 at a reunion in Colorado Springs at Palmers home.
The engraving letters before Palmer isnt clear.
