Hello All!
I didn't see one and I figured I would create a thread for any body who is a member, or interested in becoming a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, the lineal decedents of the Grand Army of the Republic.

Is anyone going to the National Encampment in Mass this weekend? If you are I look forward to seeing you!

I am not a member but suspect I am eligible. My G-G-grandfather was a Union soldier, but died in the War so he was never a member of the Grand Army of the Republic.

I am eligible, but I just never joined. The group in town here disbanded awhile back, so no reason to join anymore. I could join the SCV, but I have no real interest in it at all.

Would either of you be interested in joining I can help you if you are. Our group is a lineal organization but a) to be a lineal just means they served and b) you can join even if you don't have an ancestor that served.

Haha I know that feeling... just know you dont have to join the closest camp to you it's really the best fit for you personally

When I asked my friends what they did at the meetings, the meetings did not sound like too much fun to me. I did not know what to expect the meetings to be like, but still when told what they did at meetings, it did not sound real fun to me.

Still my g-g-grandfather joined the Union Army and he died in Missouri, but I did not join the Union Army and have a bit of a issue seeing why I should be overly concerned with what he did. My mother probably did not know her great grandfather's name and I never heard my grandfather say his name (I assume he knew his grandfather's name but who knows). In fact if my wife had not did some family research I would not have known his name or that he joined the Union Army, or that he died in Missouri.

Makes sense, some camps operate differently than others and it's not everyone's thing so I can respect not wanting to join.

I was a member for quite a few years but I worked nights and that was when they had most of their meetings. My. Last year of work I had some health problems and I let my membership expire, just when I could make the meetings. Guess I could call and get back in
To be honest what I miss most is not getting :The Banner newsletter.

He would not have had to be a member of the GAR just a union solder who had not "willingly" bore arms against the United States Army.

I enjoy the companionship more than anything else. Every camp is different, some meeting more often than others and some doing more than others. I suspect it has a great deal to do with leadership which changes from time to time. I wouldn't say that I've had much fun participating in events and ceremonies but I have felt accomplished and it's brought some meaning into my life that, for once, doesn't involve achievements on video games.

My great-grandfather was a Southern Unionist who joined the 1st Mississippi Mounted Rifles and fought for the Union. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant and was a company commander. He mustered out in June of 1865. I live in CT and tried to contact three different SUVCV camps but never got a response. I think the info on the site must be outdated. Any suggestions? Although I live in CT, I wonder if I might be more connected to a Trans Mississippi group.

I believe you can join camps out of your area or at the national level. Thinking about rejoining but have a lot on my plate at the moment.

I've applied for membership with a camp in Kansas. Because of the distance, I probably won't be able to attend meetings very often. But I figured it was at least worth giving it a try. Going to a national event sounds like fun, but not realistic for me, unless it was fairly close.
