Hey yall. After visiting Chickamauga, Gettysburg, and Antietam last year, my wife and I wanted to have at least one mini vacation this year. We were thinking about Shiloh (over 9 hours away), but neither of us are up for another 8-12 hour drive again anytime soon.

We enjoyed our trip to Chickamauga so much last year, we decided to go again this year at the end of March. We covered the battlefield pretty well last year, and may just do over the entire field guide we used last year. The guide consisted of around 30 total stops throughout the entire battlefield. Last year I learned I am addicted to walking/hiking battlefields with a field guide. I also wanted to visit some of the out of the way places we might have missed last year.

Is there anything off the beaten path that yall might recommend?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Are you referring to the Woodworth field guide? If so, I also found it very useful. If not, check it out!

Drop down south on I-75 a few miles and visit the Resaca Battlefield park. The have a couple of trails one of which will take you in a long loop across Camp Creek on the west than back down on the Confederate side of the line. And late March should be a much better time, weather wise, than my first trip there in August

There is plenty of other place that are close, Ringold,Tunnel Hill, Dalton, Kennesaw Mt. but I have to say that if you have never been to Shiloh the extra time is WELL worth the trip.

My second time at Chickamauga I concentrated on the northeastern end of the park, just to get an idea of the terrain and the dense forest (apparently that part of the battlefield is much like it was in 1863). I also took a closer look at the area of Longstreet's assault. I didn't spend an entire day as I'd driven up from Atlanta and also wanted to see at least part of Kennesaw Mountain.

My wife and I spent two days touring the battlefield last year, but feel like we might try and see more of the monuments. For some reason, on our first visit, I was automatically drawn to Poe field and the Georgia monument......it wasn't until later as we came back to one of the tour stops there that I realized what occurred there.

I have been to the Chickamauga area twice and have spent probably 3 full days on the battlefield and have yet to set foot in Brock Field or Kelly Field.

Off the Beaten PAth on battlefield:
Reeds Bridge
Alexanders Bridge
Eli Lilly Battery in Viniard Field
walk all 4 knolls of Horeshoe Ridge using main trail

Off battlefield:
Ringgold Station, Andrews Raiders monument, Ringgold Gap, Old Stone Church Musuem
Tunnel Hill Museum and Ride thru the tunnel
Lafayette cemetery, Gordon Academy and the markers around it, McLemore's Cove/Davis Crossroads battle
the city of Chickamauga, Gordon Lee Mansion, Crawfish Springs, depot musuem (if still open)
Iowa monument in Rossville (shaped like the state) and John Ross House
Alpine Church near Menlo -very old and interesting - CW battle and meeting held there and the CSA monument in Menlo is one of a kind

I would throw in Nathan Anderson Cemetery in Ringgold and Rock Springs Church and Cemetery but that kinda stuff interests me more than other folks.
