Yesterday, I had the honor of attending a one-mile walking tour with CHCH NPS Historian Jim Ogden as he examined the experience of Benjamin Helm's Kentucky Brigade on September 20, 1863. A key area in their assault "was part of a cedar glade that stretched approximately 1-mile in length, north to south, and 100-150 yards wide at various points along its extent. The area saw some of the heaviest fighting on the battlefield. Over the last 162 years since the battle, this area has transformed from grass and forb-dominated glades, to open-canopy woodland, to closed-canopy forest."
The Park is currently beginning efforts to "restore the area back to the native cedar glade ecosystem."
On Saturday, September 27, 2025 at 9:00 AM, you can join in this restoration effort by helping to remove vegetation between Battleline Road and the Kelly Field on the Chickamauga Battlefield. It's planned to last 3 1/2 hours.
Volunteers will meet in the lower parking lot of the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center (3370 LaFayette Road, Fort Oglethorpe, GA 30742).
For more info, go to National Public Lands Day Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park.
And, if you can't make it, please take the opportunity to volunteer at a park near you on this National Public Lands Day.
Admins, please feel free to move if there's a more appropriate place.
