From the time he was a young boy, Dayton resident Richard Metzger knew that his great-grandfather had been in the Civil War, but his interest didn't bloom until he was an adult. After years of traveling to all the battle sites where his ancestor fought, Metzger, now 82, learned about the Stillwater Civil War Roundtable — the only one in the Miami Valley, one of 29 in Ohio — and has been an active member for four years.
"My great-grandfather fought in the Western Front in Kentucky, Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama as part of the Army of the Cumberland," he said.
