Springfield or... what?

Yep. Against Japan they were a hot mess. That led to reform to a small degree, mutiny to a large degree, and spread the seeds of revolution. They did pretty well against the Austrians, but we're still hampered by backward thinking, a feeble officer corps and lack of equipment, let alone modern equipment. The Austrians, I suspect, were just a little bit more incompetent than the Russians. Both fielded excellent cavalry formations,though.
 
I would like to thank you all for your kindness and help, I've received lot of information and I'm still learning a lot.
I called the seller and I'm going to see the rifle personally this week-end and, maybe, purchase it
