Was there a specific tool used during the Civil War to remove a stuck breech plug ?
Also I think I read somewhere that only certain people were allowed to remove the plug (maybe a sergeant). Is that correct ? Thanks.

I could be wrong but that doesn't seem like that would be done out in the field. Those plugs are in there. From the ones I've seen removed it requires a vice, lots of swear words and sweat. I don't see why they would need to be removed out in the field.

Not a field thing. During an arsenal rebuild maybe.

There was a specific tool. It was available to the Ordnance Sergeants of the regular army and maybe a Regimental armorer. I've never seen an original.

it is not something that would have been done in the field. And it's not something I would recommend for the novice. I've had to help try and repair a breach plug someone buggered. There was a lot of swearing involved. And in the end a replacement breach plug was acquired. Luckily the barrel wasn't damaged which still makes me wonder.
