My grandfather bought this a long, long time ago, and he said what it was, but it's been so long, I can't remember. It reminds me almost like the Woodward Display desk eagles, but I don't think so...very wishful thinking often leads nowhere. :)

I don't have a clue and have never seen one in the CW collecting arena. With all the mounting pieces on the back I'm leaning architectural piece. Also, let this be a lesson from now on put a tag on all items.

After a bit of looking, but mine does not have a crown, or number on it.
Yes but the arrows are broken and some do not have the crown, in fact the Legion De Honor medal, is almost eactly like the depiction that you have minus the ball.

Another shako with a variation.....

But could a shako be solid brass?
No, I'm just saying that it is French and could possibly been on a coat of arms a decorative piece for a gun carriage, who knows. The ball may have had a painted regimental number on it at one time. Definitely not a shako plate as it is cast not stamped.
