Impressions Sleeve Rank Patches

Not very
  • Generally they were individual strips. It's just easy to buy prelude that's why we do it.
  • 2nd it was easier to add a strip to cpl. To make sgt.

You are welcome! Happy to help. Do you reenact?
I haven't for a good many years... work and family commitments always seemed to interfere. Now that my boys are 12 and 14, they are wanting to try it out for themselves, giving me the opportunity to return to the 'hobby' I love.

As there are few opportunities in Southern Arizona with regards to an organized regimental structure, we are beginning the process of starting two new units here; Company D, 39th NC and Company H, 8th Missouri. We've found enough interest that we hope to field at least one of these units by the fall. Once we are on stable ground, we hope to build alliances with the Arizona Civil War Council in the Phoenix to coordinate on events and such.

Sutlers will sell them sewn onto a backing, but that is not correct. They need to be cut out individually. Especially, if you have a campaigner shell jacket, the backing will not match the color. I put mine on a short time ago.

Try cutting them out and sewing on individually. The chevrons fit between the seams and sit two fingers above the elbow. Pin them in place and use a solid whip stitch. It is a lot easier than it looks!
Thank you. What's your unit?

Another nagging question... how authentic are the pre-made NCO sleeve rank patches?

Pre-assembled rank are perfectly acceptable for federal use. I don't know about Confederate.

Here are a pair I've owned since the 1960's, and although I'd tend to agree with Cpl. Smith, I think Camp Randall is correct. Of course, just because I've had them over a half-century doesn't guarantee their authenticity, but this was well before the common reenactor reproductions were available, and I believe they are old - but I wouldn't guarantee 155 years without further evidence. However, someone here recently posted a photo on the forums of a USCT NCO wearing a very similar-looking pair!

When it comes to Union chevrons, I have seen them sewn directly to the uniform and sewn to a piece of backing material.
