Question for campaigners

I was always a mainstreamer, never a true campaigner. That trend started long after I hung it up.
So....a legit question. (I hope?)

I've read some of the rules on Liberty Rifles requirements for example. Very strict for certain events. They go right down to your skivvies for authenticity. I find that commendable, but where/how do you draw the line?

Where do you guys put your car keys for example? What if you have an insulin pod or other modern medication which need daily doses? How do you deal with guys who for various reasons cannot eat shared rations? Scars from open heart surgery, etc. which would not be survivable in 1860s.

I'm genuinely interested in how you guys master your sleight of hand to make your impression as period correct as practical.

Any comments most welcome.

If you must carry medication find a period tin or poke sack to carry it in. My truck key if I'm carrying a knapsack I'll put it in one of my spare socks and put it in the knapsack. If I'm just going bedroll I'll put it in a poke sack in my havesack. They tell you to come with an empty haversack and will get issued rations which most everyone adheres to. I will tell you when I go to a Federal event I'll bring either some soft bread or cornbread in my haversack because I really can't stand hardtack. Not an issue at Confederate events, they'll issue some flour for biscuits or cornmeal. As long as you stay period correct you won't have a problem. Now scars from heart surgery..... I don't know where you're going with that but if you have a fresh heart surgery scar you're really in the wrong place. You should look through the photo album on the LR page or look them up on YouTube and you'll get an idea of what one of their events are like.

The LR mentions the medication issue in their bylaws. They are to be stored in a period correct poke sake. I would guess that's the same for car keys. Scars from surgery, in my opinion, if you can cover them cover them. But if not you could say something like "I got that scar at Monterrey fighting Mexicans."
"Or..I got that scar 10 minutes after my wife caught me in bed with her sister..." LOL

Seriously thanks for reply. I used to have a period correct snuff can and kept my keys in that.

Yeah the heart scar was pretty extreme. But that doesn't apply personally-it was just an example. I'm 70, so that alone puts me on the permanent DL. But you gave a very good answer. Thanks!

I'd say heart scars and serious medical conditions probably wouldn't mix too well. These events are typically pretty active with little down time, not sure how many more years I'll be able to keep up. But they do have a civilian sub group that comes to some events and at some of the Federal events they'll do a sanitary commission deal so there's something for everyone.
