I was helping a much younger family member with a summer history project. Went looking on YouTube for some visuals and came up with the following;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHFYAygsqGg
What I found most interesting were his comments about what he was viewing.
1. How much red there was to begin with.
2. Found the order of the states abolishing slavery very interesting
3. Wondered why some states were abolishing slavery but countries that controlled territories around the US still had it.
4. Found it interesting that the government would abolish slavery in a territory before the states themselves had to. ("But if they knew it was wrong, why didn't everyone have to stop?")
5. That it took PA such a long time to complete abolishment.
6. That some areas went green and then grey, and a few, back to red with the changing of governments or acts of government. ("But what happened to the people there that were freed? Did they go back to being slaves?")
7. "What does they grey mean? Were they free or not?"
8. Why was Indian Territory still red when all else was green?

1. His big takeaway from this was not realizing that the majority of voyages were NOT to the US. Had no idea of the enormity of the trade with Brazil and the Caribbean.
Cheers,
