One legacy of the American Revolution:
  • Expansionist Ambitions: From 1789 to 1861, Southern interests frequently sought to expand slavery into the Western U.S., the Caribbean (notably Cuba), and Central America (e.g., the "filibustering" expeditions).
  • Paradox of States' Rights: Southern leaders used Thomas Jefferson "states' rights" fiction as a legal shield to preserve the institution of slavery. Ironically, their fanaticism in defending this position eventually led to the American Civil War and the total abolition of slavery, the very outcome they aimed to prevent. in short In essence, the Confederacy "holed" itself: it could not protect slavery without a strong central government, but it could not build a strong central government without violating the states' rights principles it used to defend slavery.
  • In short the Confederacy which died of a Theroy was doomed before it was even born
