I was researching if anyone with my maiden name was ever slaveholders and I saw that the information had been given by New York Life Insurance..then I realized there must have been policies out on them. I then looked that up and couldn't believe they were insured.

That made me think what would they be insuring? If they got sick and expired? Then that made me think would the insurance company need proof of cause of death? Did they investigate these claims to make sure they were not worked-to-death or murdered? I really want to know how they would make these claims and would this cause slaveholders to be more careful how they treated their slaves? Or would these claims not be investigated and then it would cause people not to worry about a slave dying. I hope someone has some info on this!
