Hello, could anyone help me identify this Springfield rifle? My great grandfather found it and that's all I know about it.

Thanks

It has a M1858 rear sight, which if it is a M1861, would make it a very early production piece. But the date on the lock does look like 1863, so something has been replaced. Have to see more pics, like a date on the barrel at the breech, or markings on the stock opposite the lock.

She's a M1861 with a Springfield lock and an early rear sight. These were interchangeable arms and she's had 160 years for someone to mess with her.

If you can you'll want to post some more pics, one of her overall. One of the barrel bands and ramrod etc.

My first suggestion is always Kramer's Best. It will go a long way in cleaning her up.
