Can someone help me Identify this Springfield Rifle, I inherited it from my Grandfather. The barrel is rifled, I thought it might be an 1861 Springfield but what is throwing me off is the Springfield 1854 Stamp close to the hammer. I will upload pics. I know it is missing the ram rod if anyone also knows where I could purchase at least a remanufactured one.
Thank You all, happy to be in the group. :)

Thank you Johan. Is it common to find a 1854 mark on a 1842? Was 1854 the last year they made the 1842 Springfield?
The M1842 was being made through 1855 IIRC. Several thousand were rifled about that time to give them some more life. I'm away from my references so dont have dates and numbers rifled in front of me. They were a good arm though with a heavier recoil than .58. I don't really note recoil the way most do and didn't think the recoil was that bad but I know others have disagreed about such.

The rear sight was secured to the barrel via a screw they weren't soldered on as most European arms. Though there were some that never received the rear sight.

You should be able to find a re pro ramrod easy enough. The gun show angle as mentioned is another good tip.
