This set of shoulder scales and a NY State button were dug many years ago

I'd be interested to know more about the pattern on the NYS button. There are not many "as dug" NYS buttons compared to others. A reenacting group with which I am associated is always looking for examples of what could well be "early war" patterns in NYS specific uniforming. This button, "paired"and found with scales, seems to fit that early war definition.

28th, here are 3 images of the button. I hope this helps you.

Thanks so much. I'll be comparing this to a very poor image of a 28th NYVI private we have been studying; whose buttons definitely do not resemble known Federal issue of the time (May-June 1861). What we have to compare to on that image is actually the highlight/shadow pattern of the button, which does have a relatively "thick" border. If we can match images, we will be able to document evidence that the regiment did not wait for their brass, just like they didn't wait for the Federal issue of weapons (M1841 directly from Remington).
